Back In The Cold

It’s a shock to be in winter weather again after so many months of sunshine and warmth. Unfortunately, spring never comes to Colorado on time.  We arrived just a few hours ahead of a big snow storm.  Here is a picture from our drive ascending Wolf Creek Pass in southern Colorado.

We are at my mother’s house for a few weeks to see family, do taxes, and also get reorganized for the next leg of our travels.  After living in the RV for 5 months we found out that a lot of what we brought was unnecessary.  And also there are a few items to get from storage that were missed like the small grill, the bicycles, and the toaster.  As much as possible, we would rather cook outside when it’s warm because the RV heats up quit a bit with just having a stove burner on.  And last but not least, we are reunited with our dog Molly who will travel with us now.  She wouldn’t have anything to do with us the first 3-4 days we were here…..she just sat and stared (or glared) at us but now she’s her old self again.

The Grand Canyon

A big part of my life has been spent in Colorado, but I had never been to the Grand Canyon because it wasn’t much of a priority.  Actually, I always wondered what the big deal was.  Having seen it, now I know.  I’m almost tempted to not post pictures because they can’t possibly come close to how incredible the canyon is.

It was nice to find out there are two RV parks at the canyon because we thought we would have to commute to Williams, about 60 miles away.  One of the RV parks is run by a private company, has hookups, but costs $34 a night.  We stayed at Mather campground which has over 300 sites but no hookups for $18.  There were many more tents than RV’s and it was down in the low 20’s at night.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park, AZ

This park is almost walking distance to downtown Cottonwood and is a pretty good place to be until the weather warms up a bit before going to the Grand Canyon.  Actually, it’s a large, beautiful park with lots of trails, a creek, horseback riding, fishing, and two separate campgrounds.  We lucked into arriving here on a Monday and getting a site because the park is now full.  We chose a non-electric spot with water for $12 a night.  Our solar system is working fine to give us the electricity we need.  The weather is supposed to be better tomorrow at the Grand Canyon but then we will have to make a mad dash to Colorado Springs before the next snow storm on Wednesday.

Speaking of Colorado Springs, some of you have asked about our plans.  After spending a few weeks there, we will travel east with our ultimate destination being the Canadian Maritime provinces.  Then it’s sightseeing in New England and on south to visit relatives and friends on the way back west before deciding where to spend next winter.  And we are still seriously considering shipping the RV to Europe March 2011.  In fact, we were just sitting here making a list of what we need for the RV in Europe in the way of LPG adapters, an electric transformer, and so on.
