We spent last night free camped on St. Georges Bay and just a few feet from the end of the Stephenville Airport runway. The US Air Force had a base here from 1941-1966 called Ernest Harmon AFB. Wikipedia has a very informative article on the history of this air force base. “The primary focus for North American defense from Nazi aggression was Newfoundland, which the United States sought to arm as a geographic buffer much as it was doing with its Alaska Territory to defend North America against Japan in the northwest.”
All the old hangars have been colorfully painted.
There is a motor home dump station on the former air force base. (Can’t miss it coming into Stephenville.) Newfoundland is very RV friendly and our GPS shows more free overnight camping sites in this province than all the others combined.
